John Charles
No, not our John Charles but the legendary Welsh player

One for you older ones, what memories do you have of him? I vaguely remember people talking about him in reverent terms and was aware of his skills.

An absolute legend at Juventus, where he was known as Il Gigante Buono, I don't think he was ever booked?

Re: John Charles
Our John Charles said: "The idea that West Ham fans are racist is rubbish! They didn't ask if you were black or white; they asked if you were West Ham.”

A bit over-optimistic, in that there are racists everywhere, but absolutely incompatible with the idea that we're in any way worse than other clubs.

Remember, Everton were chanting "Everton are White" in THIS century.

Far - Although not related I think Wyn and Ron Davies must have played in the same Welsh teams in the 60's

Re: John Charles
John Charles was the first of a long line of big 'old school' centre forward that came out of Wales. Strong on the ground and powerful in the air. A few on here may remember those that followed in his footsteps - Ron Davies, John Toshack, Ian Rush and John Hartson.

Re: John Charles
Big name Leeds player back when I was very
young

Never saw him play in the flesh just seen a few bits on TV.

John Charles was equally good at centre back as centre forward.

He was part of the very good Welsh side that [played in the 1958 world cup finals. Undefeated in their group stage with John Charles scoring the goal that sent them through to the next stage.

Unfortunately Charles got hurt in that last game and could not face Brazil in the Q/F

Brazil scrapped through with a goal from Pele.

With a fit Charles playing most people thought they could go on to win.

Re: John Charles
I’ve posted on a similar thread before.
My Grandad used to take me to Hereford Inited in the late 60’s when John Charles was the player manager.
I remember this enormous bald headed man with his white shirt stretched so tight even though it must have been XXL
He just seemed to score every game which I know is the fickle memory of a boy of 8 or 9 but his speciality was the towering header - no surprise there
Not until many years later did I realise I had been privileged to see a great great footballer laying for my small town club purely for the love of the game

Yes, he does but it might just be that as they jogging Mel is going up as John is coming down?

Other pictures suggest they were very similar physically

Re: John Charles
I know what Jez said, he said quote "Absolutely adored at Juventus where he was voted foreign player of the 20th century"

Now where in that statement does he say he was better than Platini or Laudrup?

I'm assuming that Juve fans voted on that poll, are they all wrong and Manuel the printer expert, is right?

Re: John Charles
What?

The bloke below me said it, and I'm simply saying he must have been some player if he was deemed better than Platini and laudrup who were unbelievable players. You are all over the fucking place, you feeling okay?

Far Cough 2:24 Wed Apr 1
Re: John Charles
So you have never seen him but you think Laudrup and Platini are 2 of the best players of all times?

and who said he was voted better than Platini or Laudrup

Re: John Charles
Was before my time, but I now you have spoke about Charles many times, Cough.

As for being voted better than Laudrup and Platini? They are 2 of the best players of all time.

Absolutely adored at Juventus where he was voted foreign player of the 20th century, beating Michele Platini, Michael Laudrup, Ziggy Boniek and Omar Sivori.
